Jamaica is one of the favorite holiday destinations. The country is divided into fourteen parishes, and all of the parishes have beautiful beaches. However, perhaps two of the most well-known towns in Jamaica are Ocho Rios and Negril. These two resort towns were in two different James Bond works; Ocho Rios was in the very first James Bond film Dr. No, while Negril’s historical background was featured in Ian Fleming’s The Man with the Golden Gun novel. Confused in choosing your holiday destination? Let’s see the comparisons between Ocho Rios vs Negril below to help you decide!
Ocho Rios is located in the parish of Saint Ann. It is on the north coast of Jamaica. Reaching the place is now easier and quicker than before, because the North Coast Highway that connects the international airport in Montego Bay to Ocho Rios has been revitalized. The north-south portion of the Highway 2000 has recently been opened as well, allowing easy driving and commute times to the nation’s capital city Kingston.
On the other hand, Negril is a small but wide resort town that spans across two parishes, Hanover and Westmoreland. It is located on the west coast of the country. The northernmost resorts are in Hanover, while the southern portion and the famous Seven-Mile Beach are in Westmoreland. Reaching Negril may take more time because it is a little bit farther from the international airport. You may need about an hour and fifteen minutes to drive from Sir Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay to Negril.
Beaches and Resorts
Both Ocho Rios vs Negril have notably famous resorts. However, if you are looking for a quiet, not-so-crowded beach, you will have a better chance with Ocho Rios. This is because the resorts have private beaches. You will enjoy more privacy. On the other hand, Negril’s beaches are technically public, so don’t be surprised to find crowds especially in the holiday seasons.
However, overall, Negril still has the best beaches. Although it has public beaches, the coast is very long. The Seven-Mile Beach is very beautiful. Don’t forget to take your time to walk down the coastline during the sunset. There are also cliffs where you can see the performance of cliff jumpers.
Nevertheless, if you are looking for a holiday destination with lots of excursions, you may lean more towards Ocho Rios. This resort town is a port for various ships, and there are scuba diving and water sports activities in the vicinity. Just outside the city, you can visit the Columbus Park and see Spanish maritime artifacts and colonial buildings. The other major point of interest is the Fern Gully, which was resulted by an earthquake in 1907 that destroyed the river beds in the area to create three miles of great rocky gorge.
Negril does not have as many excursions. However, there is the Great Morass swamp on the east. The West End Road has a Belgian-engineered lighthouse that creates beautiful scenery. The foods are good.
Ocho Rios seems to be better because it has private beaches and more excursions. However, Negril is still a viable choice if you want to enjoy beautiful beaches and scenery.
